1987 Abstract:

This paper discusses the importance of implicit as well as explicit communications zoos transmit to their visitors and suggest “homocentricity” is an inappropriate yet central message of all zoos and aquariums today. The author suggests “biocentricity” as a more appropriate message delivered through immersive experiences and measured “…by the pulse rate of the visitor”. Recreational experiences must also be educational if zoos and aquariums are to reach their potential in fostering conservation advocacy in their visitors.
