1997 Abstract:

Activity-based design strives to fully integrate animal husbandry, training, enrichment and display with facility design. This is a great advance over the traditional process where zoo staff attempt to develop and implement animal management systems after the facility has been constructed and independent specialists in training and enrichment seek to remediate design flaws which could have been avoided in the first place. This paper discusses the activity-based design process and illustrates possible outcomes with examples of breakthrough zoo exhibits.
