Toledo Zoo Master Plan 1981

Rhino Exhibit and Entry

Left photo shows the white rhino exhibit thirty years after design. The right photo features the historic Lion House converted into the Toledo Zoo’s excellent restaurant.

Toledo had an excellent old zoo/museum facility with handsome buildings from the City Beautiful period. But they were old, and their animal facilities were out of date. Bill Dennler, then the director, was an enthusiastic collaborator, but like most people, had difficulty visualizing what we were suggesting. In this case I took sequential photos walking through areas of the zoo and traced over them sketches of the proposed sequence of visitor views, a hand-sketched version of modern computer-generated walk-through videos. This approach was very successful. Lesson learned – it is the designer’s responsible to find ways to communicate the fits clients’ needs.
